Knitting Gauge

A knitting gauge is used to determine the diameter of the wheat weaving straws. A knitting gauge is available at most fabric stores. Be sure to click on the next button below for more wheat varieties.

Autumn (Bronze bearded)
Uniform shaped heads that are 2 ½ -3 ½
inches long grace slender uniform golden
stems that are 16-22 inches in length,
diameter #1-2. Awns are 2-21/2 inches in
length.
The stems can be joined and
are suitable for splinting.
This wheat is pliable,
attractive and a good all
purpose wheat. Approx.
200+ straws per lb.

Jeff (Bronze Bearded)
Tight uniform 2-2 ½ inch heads on very
slender 16-20 inch golden stems, diameter
#0-1. Awns are 1 ½ to 2 inches long.
Stems are hollow allowing joining of new
stems and splinting.
A good all purpose wheat,
especially for fine weaves.
275+ straws per lb.

Kahla (Black Bearded) Not Available This Year
Golden stems are 22-26 inches long with
2-3 inch medium dark brown and flatten
heads. The awns are 4-5 inches long,
black, tipped in light brown . Stems are
nearly solid and not suitable for splinting
or joining.
Pliable and makes a long
plait. A beautiful wheat for
weaving. 175 straws per lb.

3.

Chili (Black Bearded)
Cream colored 20-21 inch stems have
cream colored, flatten and tapered heads
2-2 ½ inches long with flaring 4 ½ -5 inch
awns. Awns are nearly black with light
brown tips. The stems are solid making
this wheat unsuitable for splinting or
joining, diameter is #2-3.
A beautiful wheat that makes
a very attractive weaving but
is quite stiff to work with.
Heads are heavy, 135+
straws per lb.

Golden Ball (Black Bearded)
Large cream colored and flatten 2 - 3 inch heads are tapered. The awns are 4 1/2 - 6 inches long and a mixture of black and cream colors. Stems are 19 - 20 inches long are cream/golden in color. Stems are stiff but workable and makes a very attractive weave.
Stems are nearly solid making this wheat unsuitable for splinting or joining.

Pirate (Black Bearded)
Stems are 18-21 inches long in an amber
color, heads are 2-2 ½ inches long and are
a nut color and flattened. Awns are 4-5 ½
inches, black with amber tips. This wheat
is not suitable for joining or splinting.
Straw diameter #1-3
A beautiful wheat, and is a
favorite for displaying but is
fairly stiff although not as
hard to work with as other
black bearded wheats.
150+ straws per lb.

Blizzard (Bearded Blonde) SOLD OUT
Tapered stems are 13-18 inches long,
heads 1 ½ -2 inches long with 2 inch
awns. Heads and stems are a light gold
and have a waxy sheen. Works well for splitting and ironing.
Bundle will have a good
amount of very fine straws
used for delicate detail work.
